Busy Week! And an IKEA trip.

October 23rd, 2015 at 02:19 pm

Well, the week is almost over, but I still have 3 more shoots. ha! So not quite over for me... the week has been going fairly well. Traveled to Pittsburgh for a shoot that went really well, covered an event last night, and today I'm catching up on grocery shopping and a bit of cleaning as well as my editing.

Hit IKEA when I was in Pitts - it was nice to be able to make that trip a business expense. I probably would have made a trip out there at some point soon regardless. We needed a duvet badly now that it's getting cold, and I couldn't find them as cheaply anywhere else. So to the magical wonderland we went!

I brought along $200 cash from our wedding gift stash to spend there. Anything over that amount would come out of my personal account, but I was more or less setting that as my budget. I went $9 over. Not too shabby. Things I purchased:

- Duvet
- Duvet cover
- Extra blanket
- 2 throw pillows
- 2 throw pillow covers
- 2 matching lamps
- 2 "bowl plates"
- Paper towel holder
- Random brush for shower
- Pack of 2 power strips

The main objective was the bedding, and the difference is startling in our bedroom. We actually look like we have a grown-up bed now. haha. Also, the lighting for the bedroom was a HUGE improvement. We were working with 2 dorm-style work lamps that were probably $5 each, and didn't match. I love the new lamps - classy, and only $20 each.

Now I just need to clean our night stands... and eventually replace them so they match. But that can wait for sure. I really want to start making our home feel a bit more polished, but DH is getting sticker shock. We've lived in an apartment with a mixing of old furniture from his parent's house and stuff I've bought. As I was perusing on Overstock the other day he looked at a side table I was looking at and didn't understand why it was so expensive. I don't think he understands at all how much furniture really costs. Outside of our bed and cheap couch, he hasn't really made any furniture purchases. So I figure slow and steady is the way to go. haha. I also don't want to break the bank with wants that outweigh needs, either. So it'll be a very slow process indeed. Or at least about making purchases that have a high-impact for less.

At any rate, time for me to get back to work! Hope you are all having a great Friday!

Sounds like a fun trip to Ikea. I enjoyed your post particularly since I've spent the past two days moving furniture around so that side tables. bed tables and side chairs don't look matched to the the other furniture. I'd repainted a headboard but decided it was cozier for winter to hang a romantic quilt to substitute and added needed texture. I should set up the sewing machine and hem a piece of fabric I want to use as a table runner. Laziness took over and I used 'Stitch Witchery' to merely iron the hem. I'l likely have used fabric glue but I get a long use in spite of regular washing.

You might try moving side tables to other rooms before buying new. Alternatively, if you paint them the same color as the wall, they continue to serve their function without looking jarring.

@starfishy - I know right?! And we're talking king sized bedding... I call it a wonderland for a reason Wink Such great deals.

@VS_ozgirl - Thanks! You're always so wonderfully encouraging Big Grin

@snafu - Glad moving things around worked for you! We don't really have a whole lot to move around, unfortunately. And I would paint the one we have, but it's the cheap particleboard that doesn't paint well - honestly, the shape alone is just ugly. haha. I'm going to check out some thrift and vintage stores in the area to see if I can find something a bit more unique and inexpensive than buying new. You never know! Also - a quilt over the headboard sounds lovely! We desperately need a headboard for our bed, but that's a project for another time.

I remember when I moved in to my very first apartment. I wanted a dining table and chairs. My dad and I went to a local Goodwill store and I found a nice table and chairs for $150. I told him that I like them, but thought it was too much. He told me - okay - let's go look at some regular furniture stores. I bought the $150 table and chairs. Smile (About ten years later, I donated them to another Goodwill.)

Should you wish to paint particleboard/laminate items sometime in the future, it helps to only lightly sand, use Zinsser or preferred brand of adhesion primer and small size foam roller. A quilt has taken the place of a headboard, hung on an inexpensive curtain rod or can be stapled in place. I've not had good long term success with doubled sided tape as hoped.
