Snow! And Groceries! And Engagement Rings!

November 14th, 2014 at 03:45 pm

I know, most of the country is freaking out about snow right now. I'm actually a little happy to see it, to be honest. It's looking rather pretty outside Smile

***

Yesterday was a true no-spend, but today I'll be hitting the grocery store to grab some stuff for meals in the next week or so. On the menu:

- Pizza (we'll get the ingredients and put it together ourselves)
- Grilled Cheese and Soup
- Homemade Cornbread Waffles with Pulled Pork, topped with an Egg

Noticed a lot of carbs, but as it starts getting colder I tend to crave comfort food. The waffles were a fun idea I had, and will probably be what I make for our weekly dinner night with friends. BF's mom gave us a waffle iron a while back and we've never used it. Figured it would be fun to try. And I like doing non-traditional spins on different meals.

So engagement rings are in my title. BF and I are at that point where we're more or less planning on getting married next fall. He's been dragging his feet a bit on the proposal, and when I asked him last month why he hadn't popped the question yet (yeah, I'm that kind of crazy), he basically told me he just hasn't gotten around to buying the ring. I very gently reminded him that if he was hoping to have the ceremony next fall that we should probably start planning soon.

The other day (without prompting, I swear), he looked at me and said, "I really do need to buy your engagement ring." He then told me to just pick one and send him a link.

I'm sure many people would say me picking the ring kind of takes the fun out of it, but I'm really laid back about these things. Being married to him is what is going to be special.

So I'm in the process of shopping for an engagement ring. haha. Looking for something nice and inexpensive. That whole "3 months salary" garbage isn't going to fly with this girl. I told him if he spent that much I would say no. Which is a lie, but I would probably have him exchange it for something more modest in that case Smile I'll go for an engagement ring with a bit more jazz, and then opt for a small, simple wedding band. In any case, I'm hoping the total is less than $500.

Now all I have to do is get my finger sized and make a decision. Can't blame it on him anymore. haha.

    Exciting!

I always thought (an experienced) that an engagement was more of a team sport than it is otherwise made out to be. We were very young and my spouse certainly wanted my input. So we left it that he would surprise me with the official engagement. There is still room for excitement, but you know, it's nice to pick out the ring you are going to wear for the rest of your life. & to discuss ahead of time if you even want to get married.

I picked out my ring, sort of. We knew we would be getting engaged soon, so we would look online and I would tell him what I liked. While browsing one day I said, "oh I really like this one."

Well a couple months later he surprised me with that exact ring. Smile
You have to wear it forever, and well... My husband has a very different taste than me. So I'm glad I actually like what I got, and didn't get stuck with a ring that I think is ugly. It didn't take any of the fun out for me. I wasn't expecting to get engaged so soon, so it was still a big surprise.

A waffle iron is a super creative cooker/tool. When DSs were young it was fun to do non traditional combinations. It's a terrific base for mini, personal preference toppings pizza, BLT, club sandwich, croque madame, Korean BimBap, trail mix mixed in batter, ham, hot dog/sausage sliced lengthwise, cinnamon stacks drizzled with cream cheese icing, with any style of chicken you like, 'biscuit' & gravy, zucchini fritter, dipped in melted chocolate. for example

Instead of a $$$, standard, small diamond how about a birthstone ring?

I like jewelry and did some research. Learned De Beers , to suggest it strengthened marriage. The campaigns target those buying less than one carat sized diamonds as technically, the value only exists in the mind of the buyer who believes the promotion. What really bothers me is the amount of fraud that surrounds the industry. Only an expert can verify if a diamond is mined or manufactured; the markup is over one thousand percent. The best value these days is likely cubic zirconia and setting of titanium. Only the 18K, 14K, 10K gold or white gold stamp verifies the setting. Since 2008, the industry has done a remarkable job selling the idea of diamond engagement rings in China. That caused a big bubble in cost.

...arrgh lost a sentence to cyberspace!

Trying to say...De Beers created the slogan 'Diamonds are Forever' in 1938 as they were desperate for money.

First of all thanks to all who doled out a "congrats." Even if we're not quite engaged yet, it's very exciting Smile
@MonkeyMama and @klarose: I'm with you both. Want to make sure the ring I'm wearing the rest of my life is something I really love. I'm a bit picky, and while my dear BF has okay taste, there's just so much out there. And so much that I consider ugly. haha.

@marvholly: I actually don't want a diamond at all. I'm looking at a lot of aquamarine, topaz, sapphire, and citrine. I actually like colored stones more than diamonds. And diamonds are just so unnecessarily overpriced. And I generally like to do things a little different, anyway. Oddly, none of these are my own birthstone. haha. Love emerald. But not so much for everyday wear.

@snafu: I'm learning to love the waffle iron, and I'm hoping to try a few of the things you mentioned! It all sounds so good! I had heard it was DeBeers that came up with that nonsense. I feel similarly about things like Sweetest Day. Kills me that these companies have so easily creeped their way into the norm.
